Million euro Burma disaster pledge
The Government has pledged an initial million euro in disaster relief after a devastating cyclone ripped through Burma killing thousands of people.
Hundreds of thousands more have been left without shelter or clean drinking water after cyclone Nargis hit the country on Saturday. Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern and Overseas Development Minister Michael Kitt have pledged humanitarian support, as it was revealed the death toll hit 22,000.
"I have asked my officials to stay in close contact with the UN, the International Red Cross and the NGO community to monitor the situation as it evolves," Mr Kitt said, adding: "For our part Ireland will initially make available up to one million euro for disaster relief."
